Fields Oregon, was first established in 1881 by Charles Fields as a roadhouse on the stagecoach line between Winnemucca, NV and Burns, OR. In 1911, he sold out to John Smyth, Smyth named the post office for Fields when it was established in 1913.
Fields is about as far as one can get from anywhere – 112 miles south of Burns, and a long, long way from anywhere else in fact it is so far out in the desert that airplanes occasionally land on the highway, pull in to the gas station, and tank up right from the pumps. Folks as far away as Germany and England come to the tiny town of Fields to enjoy the cafe which serves world famous milkshakes and cheeseburgers, they even keep track of those sold each year on a scoreboard.
There is a cafe, store, gas station, RV park, hotel/motel, post office, a few homes & behind the store is a historic cemetery. Across the highway from the cafe is a tree-lined pond, sometimes called the Fields Oasis, where you can almost always find great-horned owls.
Tom & Sandy Downs, who now operate all the businesses in Fields, are happy to welcome the many visitors each year.
Tom & Sandy say come-on-down where else can you enjoy a great milkshake and simultaneously photograph great-horned owls from six feet away?
